Serving the King of Truth
Imagine this true story, if you can. You're a 19 year old
kid dying in the jungle in Vietnam. The enemy fire is so intense they’ve
ordered the Medical Evacuation helicopters to stop coming in. As you
think of the family you’ll never see again, you know this is the moment of
truth for you. Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear the sound
of a different helicopter. Ed Freeman is coming for you. It’s not his
job, but Ed Freeman flies in, loads you on board. Then he flies you to safety
through the gunfire—and he keeps coming back--13 more times. Ed Freeman died
last year, months after finally receiving the US Congressional Medal of Honor.
But he wasn’t trying to be a hero. Ed knew the truth about himself,
and he used his life to testify to the truth that God had placed deep within
him. This is the kind of truth that it is hard to know in this world—where
broken vows and lies seem all around us. Today, the feast of Christ The King,
we hear how Jesus is not merely a king of this puny world—he is actually
the King of All Truth. Truthful actions spring from a much deeper place,
where Jesus calls us to go: he longs to show us the truth of our own existence!
Facing the WHOLE truth of our own lives is probably the hardest thing we
will ever do, because it goes far beyond our earthly roles as a mother, a
father, a daughter, a son. Those are good things, but still, Jesus
wants us to strip off all of our roles, to stand before the heart of the
King of All Truth to ask, “Who am I? What would you have me do?” Is our earthly
role too noisy and busy to hear God’s voice calling us into a deeper role?
Do we dare reveal all to the King of All Truth? Go in peace, to love and
serve our God!
